Gwynllyw's Children

children in the cathedralOn Friday, March 16th, representatives from all eighteen Church in Wales Schools in Gwent were at the Cathedral to hand over the proceeds from their fundraising efforts over recent months. Each school was presented with a certificate of thanks from the Dean and Chapter.

Among the fundraising ideas the children came up with were: Sponsored Silences, Concerts and Coffee Mornings.

The local independent schools are also contributing to the Appeal Fund. Various musicians from Rougemont School, including its Headmaster, are giving a Concert at the cathedral in aid of the Rescue Appeal Fund. Monmouth School for Boys did likewise on Thursday, May 10th.

Not to be left out, pupils from the local authority schools in Newport made their contribution via the Mayor’s Gala Concert at the Riverfront on March 22nd.

Children also came to the Cathedral on a visit as part of their Religious Education curriculum.

Each term, days are set aside for the 'Cathedral Experience', where school children have an opportunity to explore and have all their questions answered. 250 are there at any one time and in the Easter term we welcomed about 1500 children and their teachers to our mother church.

At the other end of the diocese, children and adults came to St.David's at Beaufort for Blaenau Gwent's 'Children's Activity Day'. The theme for the day was 'Saints Alive!' and activities were provided from face-painting to cross-making to painting porcelain plates.

The Children's Committee plan to offer the day to each deanery in turn. It has been a busy month with lots of happy and excited children being given the opportunity to learn more about their faith and heritage.
