LAST CHOIR STANDING'S MEN ALOUD@ ST WOOLOS

It has been anoounced that the BBC Last Choir's Standing's Finalist "Men Aloud" will perform at the Cathedral as part of a gala evening organised by Risca Salvationa Army on September 13th.

The Cardiff based Choir will join the nationaly renowned Risca Salvation Army Band.

RESCUE APPEAL GETS HIGH SHERIFF'S SUPPORT

The High Sheriff of Gwent, Mrs Judith Child JP has announced that she will organise a number of fundraising events for the Cathedral Appeal during her year of office.

The first of these will be a Michaelmas Lunch at the House of Lords, hosted by Rt Hon Lord Kinnock, on September 29th.

The appeal has been fortunate in getting support of a number of local civic dignitaries. The Appeal received nearly £20,000 from the Mayor's Charity Appeal in June 2007.

GEORGIAN FRIENDS: Will visit from Kutaisi go ahead?

The Cathedral is nervously waiting to see if it will be able to host a visit from Georgian Christians in September, following the current troubles with Russia. This is planned to be the latest in a series of twining activities involving the Cathedral and the Georgian Orthodox Church in Georgia's second city, Kutaisi.

In April a Cathedral delegation visited Kutaisi (Newport's Twin City in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia) consisting of Fr Mark Soady (Minor Canon), Catherine Hayman(Warden) and Brian Cox (Cathedral Administrator). In addition to visiting many ancient sites; meetings toke place with church leaders so as to re-kindle the strong relationship there was between the Christians in both cities in previous years. Fr Mark Soady delivered Christian greetings from the Bishop of Monmouth to Metropolitian Kalistrase.

The Delegation also met with the Mayor of Kutaisi, who presented the Cathedral with a precious Icon of St George, the Patron Saint of Georgia.

On Bible Sunday 2007 the Newport / Kutaisi Twinning Association give a gift of a new Icon of the Evangelist Luke to the Cathedral.

The Icons adorn the Cathedral's St. Luke Chapel.

 

COMINGS & GOINGS

Minor Canon, Fr Mark Soady will leave the staff of the Cathedral at the end of August to take up the newly created post of Chaplain to Newport University(Press Release).

On Sunday, July 27th the Cathedral bid farewell to two canons who are retiring this summer:Canon Ray Summers and Hon Canon Colin Wilcocks. Canon Summers celebrated and preached for the last time at the Cathedral, prior to his retirement, at the evening Eucharist.

The new Archdeacons were Collated at Evensong at the Cathedral on Sunday, July 6th. The former Archdeacon of Monmouth,Ven Glyndwr Hackett, moved to be Archdeacon of Newport and Revd Canon Richard Pain succeed him as Archdeacon of Monmouth. The Cathedral said their good bye's to Archdeacon Ken Sharpe on the last Sunday in May.

On June 22nd the Cathedral bid farwell to the Provincial Assistant Bishop, the Rt Revd David Thomas.

BISHOPS GALORE

The Bishops of Rio de Jeneiro( Brazil), West Tennesse(USA), The Highveld(S.Africa) - our twin diocese, and the Assistant Bishop of Queensland (Australia) in addition to the Bishop of Monmouth attended Evensong at the Cathedral on July 13th.

The Bishops were in the Diocese as part of the Lambeth Conference - a 10 yearly meeting of all Bishops in the Anglican Communion.
