These directions, plus map of Cathedral Road:

Directions to the Provincial Offices at 39, Cathedral Road

This page includes three sets of directions to the Provincial Offices of the Church in Wales at 39, Cathedral Road, Cardiff:

  • From Cardiff Central Station
  • From the West or A470 via Junction 33 of the M4
  • From the East via the M4 (after crossing the Severn Bridge)

FROM CARDIFF CENTRAL STATION (on foot)

  • With the station entrance behind you and facing the bus station, take the left hand exit from the forecourt.  At the traffic lights, turn left, past the Millennium Stadium, and cross the River Taff (you are now about 300 yards from the station).

  • Turn right immediately after the river into Fitzhamon Embankment.

  • After about another 400 yards, the road turns sharp left becoming Despenser Street.

  • After 150 yards, turn right by a roundabout into Lower Cathedral Road.

  • After another 150 yards at a busy junction controlled by traffic lights, Lower Cathedral Road crosses Cowbridge Road, and becomes Cathedral Road.

  • No. 39 (actually 37, 39 and 39A) is on the left between the first and second roads on the left.

  • Turn left at the first set of lights into Talbot Street, then into the first lane on the left, and left again into the car park. The main entrance to ‘39’ is from the car park.

FROM THE WEST OR A470 VIA JUNCTION 33

  • Leave M4 at junction 33 and at the roundabout take the first exit - A4232 (link road).

  • Ignore the exits for the Museum of Welsh Life and for Culverhouse Cross and after approximately 5 miles leave the link road at the exit marked Leckwith Industrial Estate and Sports Centre.

  • As you come down the slip road, stay in the left-hand lane and at the roundabout take the first exit (Leckwith Road) signposted City Centre.  You will pass a sports complex on the right and fields on the left.

  • After ¼ mile at the traffic lights go straight ahead.  You will pass under a railway bridge.

  • After 100 yards there is another set of lights.  Turn right (not acute right) into a wide road (Wellington Street) leading to the city centre.  There is a 30 mph speed limit.

  • After approximately ¼ mile go straight on at next lights, still heading towards city centre.  This is now Cowbridge Road.

  • After 300 yards at next lights turn left into Cathedral Road.  Just before the lights on the left you will see the Transport and General Workers Union building with a lawned area in front of it.

  • Continue up Cathedral Road to the next lights, signposted Sophia Gardens and Sports Centre.  Turn left here and almost immediately left again into a back lane.  The entrance to the Church in Wales’ car park is the first entrance you come to. (If for any reason the back lane is blocked by parked vehicles, go straight on and then take the next turning on the left and at the end of that road, turn left again and left into the back lane from the opposite end.)

FROM THE EAST, VIA M4 AFTER CROSSING THE SEVERN BRIDGE:

  • Leave M4 at Jct 29, signed A48(M) Cardiff. Remain on A48 when motorway becomes dual carriageway A road (after 1.5 miles)

  • Continue along A48 for about 7 miles, ignoring City Centre directions until dual carriageway ceases (just after a 3-level interchange, the 40 mph limit, a glimpse of Llandaff Cathedral to the right, and the first set of traffic lights).

  • After the river bridge (Taff) the dual carriageway recommences!

  • Fork left, signed City Centre (about 0.5 miles beyond the first lights and very soon after a set of lights for access to the Technical College on the right).  Keep in left hand lane and at traffic lights, a “T” junction (200 yds), turn left (into Cardiff Road)

  • At next set of lights (0.5 miles), turn left (left filter in operation) (into Penhill Road) Continue on this road for about 0.75 miles (it becomes Cathedral Road)

  • Just before the Pelican Crossing (the third such since turning into Penhill Road), there are turns to both right and left.  The centre of the road here is marked with hatching to facilitate entry into the left turn, signed Sophia Gardens (Welsh Institute of Sport), for those coming away from the city centre (right turn for them).  The right turn, Talbot Street, is between a pillar box on one corner and old red telephone box near the other.

  • Turn right into Talbot Street and after 20 yards turn left down the “back lane” – a brick-built garage is on the corner.

  • The first accessible car park on the left is that for The Church in Wales.  Park in any space except that immediately adjacent to rear entrance of building (kept for deliveries).
